Virtual worlds like Second Life and Roblox show that people are open to socialising, playing games, exchanging information, and having a good time in virtual worlds. Recently, virtual HQs, Meta’s investment in interactive social software, and a few acquisitions by Microsoft show that the metaverse could play a role in the future of work.

We’re fortunate that there isn’t yet a general agreement on what the metaverse might look like in the long term: opposing viewpoints help us think more broadly about application scenarios that will help define and mainstream this still-amorphous concept.

Is the metaverse for work or play?

Listen to the most recent podcast episode to get a sense of our initial thoughts on equity. We asked Natasha Mascarenhas, Alex Wilhelm, and our newest crypto and fintech reporter Anita Ramaswamy to talk about the future of the metaverse and whether or not its predominant use will be for work or play.

  • Anita Ramaswamy: Workers can enjoy the best of both worlds at the metaverse water cooler.
  • Natasha Mascarenhas: The metaverse and the future of work are in direct conflict each other
  • Alexandra Wilhelm: The integration of work, recreation, and self-expression is happening inch by inch.
  • Anita Ramaswamy: Workers can enjoy the best of both worlds at the metaverse water cooler.

The future of the metaverse can’t be predicted without first defining it. The internet, as it exists today, is the metaverse to those who do not use blockchain technology as their primary means of communication. The so-called “metaverse” that is currently causing such a stir is merely an addition to current technology, not a radical change. Companies that can attract users beyond the crypto-native set are likely to benefit most from the rise of newer metaverses, and those are likely to be the big tech platforms because of their focus on the office.
