Lint from one’s pocket. An “IP Metaverse” is apparently being planned by Bandai Namco, a gaming publisher, to allow its fans to interact across its various IPs via shared interfaces and spaces.

Bandai Namco’s announcement is more of a plan than a definitive conclusion, so it’s difficult to know exactly what that means in practise just yet.

In order to bring the project to fruition, it has stated that it will invest 15 billion (about £96 million) in it. Bandai Namco’s unique strengths in fusing physical products and venues with digital elements are one of the goals of the initiative, which also includes providing players with the opportunity to “enjoy a wide range of entertainment on an IP axis.”.

It’s unclear if this means you’ll be able to meet up with fans of the Souls, Tales, and Pac-Man series in separate locations, or if they’ll all be thrown together in one big pot.

The publisher’s stated goal appears to be to expand sales outside of Japan, and using the metaverse as a marketing tool is an effective way to do so. However, we must wait to see the plan’s actual results before determining whether or not the investment has been worthwhile.
