Smith was a fan of both the theatrical cut and the director’s cut of Suicide Squad, despite the film’s bad response. On the red carpet for the opening of Bel-Air, Smith told Variety, “There’s a whole lot that stayed on the floor for ‘Suicide Squad.'” Regardless of the final product, Smith seemed to have enjoyed his time in the DC Extended Universe as Deadshot. “Yes, I’m in! That’s a place I’d like to live in. Both versions have something that appeals to me. To see it would be a dream come true for me.” Smith’s performance as Deadshot in the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad wasn’t one of the film’s many missteps. Smith’s character, one of the film’s most fascinating ones, was depicted as more of an antihero than a fully wicked villain, motivated by his love for his daughter rather than sheer evil. It’s possible that a director’s cut may make the film even better than its theatrical version, depending on how much attention is given to Deadshot’s connection with his daughter.
What’s the harm in releasing Ayer’s original concept at this point?
Even if you don’t like it, Suicide Squad had a stellar cast, including Jared Leto, Jada Pinkett Smith, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis. Although the film’s plot was convoluted and the climax was a let-down, these actors genuinely cared about the characters they played. There is a good probability Warner Bros. will give Suicide Squad a second shot after releasing the director’s cut of Justice League and its great reception. If Warner Bros. decides to distribute Ayer’s version of the film, it must also consider the time. There was even more widespread admiration for The Suicide Squad’s sequel than there was for Zack Snyder’s Justice League. After James Gunn’s film, it may be possible to capitalise on the ever-growing popularity of its original material. Especially now that Peacemaker is being aired, which only serves to increase that popularity even further.
